Samhain Altar Checklist: What to Include and Why

Why Build a Samhain Altar?

Samhain marks the turning of the year—a time for honoring ancestors, reflecting on what we’ve released, and preparing for the quiet of winter. Your altar becomes the heart of this observance, a space for both ritual and remembrance.

A Samhain altar can be as small as one candle and a photograph or as detailed as a full seasonal display. The point is to create a place for remembrance, reflection, or harvest observance—not to meet an aesthetic standard.

What Goes on a Samhain Altar?

A Samhain altar doesn’t need to be elaborate. It should reflect your intention—honoring the dead, celebrating the harvest, or inviting deep personal transformation.

Some witches decorate their altars with seasonal foods and colors, while others focus on ancestral photos, offerings, and candles.

That’s why I’ve created a one‑page printable checklist—to make it easy to gather what you need and design a space that feels meaningful.

This one-page checklist includes:

  • Core altar tools: Candles, incense, and other ritual basics.
  • Ancestral offerings: Photos, food, and tokens for honoring loved ones.
  • Seasonal items: Pumpkins, gourds, autumn herbs, and more.
  • Optional extras: Divination tools, moon water, and witchy décor.

Quick Tips for Your Altar Setup

  • Work with color magic: Black for protection, orange for harvest energy, and white for spiritual connection.
  • Include offerings: Bread, cider, or a favorite dish of your ancestors.
  • Light the way: A single candle can symbolize the connection between worlds.
  • Keep it safe: Use stable candle holders and non-flammable decorations.

Use the checklist as a menu, not a shopping list. Choose the items that support your purpose, leave out the rest, and keep open flames away from dried leaves, fabric, and other decorations.
